Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Garryndruig

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Garryndruig, County Cork: a circular earthen ringfort, 45 metres across, with a 0.9m bank and shallow outer ditch, its narrow north-west gap facing the open slope. People may have lived there, herded there, or simply avoided it after dark; the shapes still fit a hand-led world, even when the names have thinned to legend.
In pasture, on E-facing slope. Circular, slightly raised area (43.5m N-S; 45m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (H 0.9m), with external fosse SW->NNW (D 0.8m). Gap to NNW (Wth 2m). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
