Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Garryadeen

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Garryadeen, County Cork: a circular earthen enclosure about thirty metres across, mapped in 1842 and still arcing west to east on later surveys before pasture and plough levelled it away. It stood on a west-facing slope where shadow comes early and light leaves reluctantly. People may have kept stock, hidden tools or marked boundary there; the earth forgot, but the shape resisted forgetting long enough to be drawn twice.
Shown as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map; hachured arc WSW->E on 1904 and 1938 OS 6-inch maps. In pasture, on W-facing slope. Levelled; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
