Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Garranes (kinalmeaky By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts in West Cork hide human bones and brass coins inside shallow earth rings, waiting for stubborn boots. Garranes keeps one such ring beside the sea, its underground passage still breathing under the grass. The builders forgot to leave instructions, but they remembered to leave a door.
Circular shallow depression indicates position of site. Man-made underground passage (CO084-08502-) in interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
