Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Garraneboy

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are human making, not fantasy: ringforts and ritual sites misnamed after the facts stopped being remembered. Garraneboy kept a circular enclosure about fifty metres wide on the 1842 map, then lost its visible trace when the land was levelled around 1943. The nearby gallaíns and fulacht fiadh suggest a place where people lived, hunted, cooked and repeated rituals until the ground itself became a room.
Shown as circular enclosure (diam. c. 50m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. According tolocal information, site levelled c. 1943, although enclosure is not marked on 1904 and 1935 OS 6-inch maps. No visible surface trace. Two gallaíns (CO063-080---; CO063-081---) c. 150m to NNE and c. 80m to NE, respectively. Fulacht fiadh (CO063-084---) c. 100m to SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
