Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Garrane (pubblebrien By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fort Elizabeth is a circular earthen ring in County Limerick, not a fairy tale but a human stronghold. Its scarped bank and shallow ditch still mark the boundary where pasture and memory meet. The cleared interior faces every direction, inviting scrutiny rather than hiding from it.
In gently undulating pasture with good views in all directions. The site of the 19th Century ‘Fort Elizabeth’ House is located 210m to SW. Surveyed by the ASI in 2001 and described as a raised circular shaped area (diam. 24m) defined by a bank reduced to a scarped edge (H 1.2m) and external fosse (Wth 2.1m; D 0.3m) that has been incorporated into a field boundary from SE to SW. The interior is level. The monument is clearly visible on Google Earth orthoimage taken 14/02/2020. See attached Google Earth orthoimage Compiled by: Martin Fitzpatrick Date of upload: 31 July 2020

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
