Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Garranard

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mature pines now conceal the oval earthworks of the Garranard ringfort, though a low earthen bank and dry-stone wall still mark its boundary within the pasture. The site sits on a gentle slope above outcropping limestone, where a nearby scarped depression may be an ancient annex or simply a natural formation. Local tradition calls it a fairy fort, suggesting the hidden ground belongs to unseen neighbours rather than forgotten people.
In pasture, on gentle N-facing slope, in area of outcropping limestone. Oval area (23.5m N-S; 20.6m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.25m; ext. H 0.6m) WSW->ENE, but bank replaced/overlain by dry-stone field wall ENE->WSW so that site occupies SE corner of large pasture field. Level interior is covered by mature coniferous trees which also cover much of enclosing element. Immediately to SE is ovoid area (26m N-S; 17.5m E-W) defined by a scarped edge (H 0.65m; Wth 5.25m), which is covered by nettles and thistles; this may be annex associated with enclosure but as likely a natural limestone feature.
