Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Freemount

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Freemount holds a vanished fort, not a proud monument but a forgotten mouth. The story ties it to James Mahony's land, yet the field has swallowed the boundary. What remains is a challenge: to stop believing that every honest detail must appear polished or complete.
In the 1940s traces of a 'lisín or little fort' were recorded in James Mahony's land (Schools Manuscript, Co. Kerry). This rath has not been precisely located. Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork. Date of upload: 31 January 2011

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
