Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Fortpark

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fortpark holds a fifty-two-metre earthen ring on a grassy rise, its southern entrance still sharp enough to invite entry while quarrying bites the northeast edge. The bank and ditch mark a place where people likely lived, loved and argued before forgetting the names of its residents. A field wall now cuts the northern ditch, proving that ordinary life keeps rewriting the boundary of the old fort.
On a rise in level grassland. Well- preserved circular rath (D 52m) defined by a bank and external fosse with traces of a possible outer bank visible intermittently. Quarrying has encroached upon the monument at NE. Well-defined entrance at SSW. A field wall cuts the fosse at N. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
