Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Finnor More

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No visible gate, no broken edge, no excuse for entry. The fort is a closed circle of earth and grass on a sunny slope, complete enough to exclude every human assumption about how it works.
On the gentle S-facing slope of a ridge. Listed as 'Enclosure' in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996). A circular grass and rush-covered area (int. diam. 29m N-S; 28m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4.5-6.5m; int. H 0.4-0.9m; ext. H 0.65-1.2m) with some internal facing-stones at E, and traces of a fosse (Wth 2.5-3m) visible as bands of rushes at N and S. The bank is damaged at SW, but the original entrance could not be identified. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 27 April 2020
