Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Fiddaun (kiltartan By.),isertkelly North

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fiddaun holds a broken circular rath twenty-three metres across, its earthen bank still visible from north-northeast through south to southwest while the northwest has vanished beneath a later boundary wall. The fort sits in gently undulating pastureland beside rock outcrop, small enough to have suited a family, a herder or a seasonal refuge rather than a grand castle. Its name feeds the fairy story, but the shape and size point to ordinary human occupation: a place to keep people, animals or belongings together when the land turned wet, cold or hostile.
In gently undulating pastureland and rock outcrop. Poorly preserved circular rath (diam. 23m) defined by a bank which survives from NNE through S to SW. The townland boundary wall cuts across the monument at NNE and SW and no visible surface trace of the bank survives to the NW of it.
