Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Fenagh (rosclogher By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fenagh holds a grass-covered oval ringfort on a slight rise above Glencar valley, defined by an overgrown earthen bank and a faint external ditch. The entrance has vanished beneath soil and time, leaving only a hidden boundary between human memory and fairy speculation.
Situated on a slight rise towards the top of a S-facing slope on the N side of Glencar valley with a stream immediately to the E. Grass-covered oval area (int. dims 27.3m E-W; 22.8m N-S) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (at NE: Wth 5m; int. H 0.7m; ext. H 2.1m), with a slight external fosse (Wth 3m) at NE. The original entrance is not identified. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 September 2008
