Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Farranastig

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Farranastig: local people called it a fort field on a knoll. Whether humans built it or fairies danced there, the land still treats it like a boundary marker. A ringfort lies nearby, suggesting the area once belonged to someone who needed defences or identity. The field remembers that claim even when walls have vanished.
In pasture, atop knoll. According to local information, site of 'fort'. Locally known as 'fort field' (Walsh 1985, 94, 97, no. 3). Possible ringfort (CO062-205---) c. 180m to SW. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
