Fairy fort in Egmont, County Cork: a circular earthen ringfort near the hilltop, mapped in 1842 and 1937, levelled in 1943 according to local information. Its bank and ditch have vanished from the ground but reappear in aerial photographs as a cropmark, a ghost circle written in shade and soil. The fort may have been a farmstead, a boundary marker, or a child's climbing ring before anyone knew it as history. Under the tillage it still turns, waiting for rain to remind the field of its shape.
