Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Duneel

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Situated just S of the summit of a prominent hill, in pasture with excellent views to E and SW. Monument described in 1971 as an oval-shaped area (33m N-S; 28.8m E-W) enclosed by a low poorly preserved bank and shallow external fosse best visible from WSW-W-NNW. The scarp and a portion of the interior have been quarried away from S-SW-WSW. There is a slight gap (Wth at top 8m; basal Wth 3.6m) in the bank at E, however this may not be the original entrance. The interior has a very gentle N-facing slope and a small area of rock outcrop toward the centre. See attached profile of monument surveyed and drawn by the ASI. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien. Date of upload: 30 July 2019

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
