Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Drumrane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Not a fairy fort at all but a human ringfort, built on the drumlin summit in Drumrane, County Cavan, and still named for the strange idea that fairies occupy what people forget. A house stands where the fort stood, burying the ditch and bank under garden, yard and daily life. The name preserves the shape even when the shape disappears.
Marked 'Fort' on OS 1836 ed. and 'Site of' on 1876 ed. Situated on the summit of a drumlin hill. The site is now occupied by a dwelling. Not visible at ground level. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
A fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Drumrane, likely dating to the early medieval period, is situated on a drumlin hill and was marked on early Ordnance Survey maps; it is now occupied by a dwelling and not visible at ground level. Local tradition may associate the site with fairy lore, as suggested by its name.
