Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Drumcunnion

Situated towards the top of the S-facing spine of a drumlin. It is depicted as a D-shaped feature surviving on the S side of an ENE-WSW field bank on the 1834 and 1907 editions of the OS 6-inch map. This is a D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 32m ENE-WSW; c. 20m NNW-SSE) That slopes down steeply to the E (H 1.4m) and W (H 2.6m) of a central rib defined by an earthen bank (at ENE: Wth of base 4m; it. H 0.2m; ext. H 1.6m) ENE-SW that morphs into a steep scarp ((Wth 3.6m; H 2.3m) SW-W but the perimeter is truncated by a WNW-ESE field bank at N and no feature is visible N of this, although a curving field bank (Chord c. 45m N-S) may continue the line of the perimeter at W. There is no visible fosse or entrance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986).
