Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Dromalta

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No fairy fort, no magic circle. A human ringfort in Dromalta: shallow ditch, thin outer bank, broken scarp, and a wide northern gap where entry and exit became one gesture. The land is damp and open, so the making was not grand but decisive: cut, carry, leave a hole for life to pass through.
Situated in poorly drained pasture on a very gentle W-facing slope with good views over rolling pasture in all directions. Consists of a sub-circular area (22.4m NW-SE; 21.6m NE-SW) defined by a scarped edge (Wth 2.36m; H 0.3m), with an external fosse (Wth 1.4m; D 0.1m) from NE to SW and atNW, and with traces of an external earthen bank (ext. H 0.2m; Wth 1.4m; int. H 0.2m) at SW. There is a gap in the scarp (Wth 7.1m) at NNE. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 3 July 2013
