Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Dromalta

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Dromalta, County Limerick: a sub-oval earthen ringfort, 21.5m by 18.9m, with a scarped edge, partial outer fosse and faint outer bank, set in open pasture where every approach can be seen. People may have lived there, herded there, hidden there or simply marked the land as theirs; the earth kept the shape while the names changed.
Situated in the NW corner of a field of gently undulating pasture with good views in all directions. Identified from aerial photography as a potential enclosure. It consists of a sub-oval area (21.5m N-S; 18.9m E-W) defined by a scarped edge (Wth 3m; H 0.4m), with an external fosse (Wth 2.2m) from N to SE, and with traces of an external bank (int. H 0.2m; Wth 1.6m; ext. H 0.2m) from NNE to E. Compiled by: Denis Power Date of upload: 3 July 2013
