Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Doorlus

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are human ringforts misnamed because people stopped remembering the hands that built them. In Doorlus that forgotten hand leaves a circular scarped edge, a narrow fosse, a counterscarp bank and an eastern gap where two parallel banks run out like a road abandoned before it finished. The field may have smothered the name, but the shape still points back to the household that lived there.
In pasture. Roughly circular area (40m E-W) truncated on NW side by SW-NE field boundary, otherwise defined by scarped edge (H 0.9m; Wth 3.3m) with external fosse (D 0.3m; Wth 1.1m) and counterscarp bank (int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.45m). Interior, under pasture, slopes up gently towards centre. Gap (Wth 3m) in counterscarp bank at E; outside this two low parallel earthen banks, 3m apart, run for c. 25m.
