Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Dirtane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

That is a fairy fort. It is a circle of earth, not a building, and it still belongs to the living place. The chamber may have had a roof, a door and a keeper, but those parts have gone. What remains is the shape of the circle and the memory of being held inside it.
This circular enclosure is marked on the 1842 OS map hut does not appear on the later edition. Today no surface trace of the enclosure remains other than a small irregular mound, 26m x 16m and .8m high. This mound could suggest the remains of a Man-made underground passage (KE014-073001-). The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 472. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013
