Carrowreagh and Derreen still hold a circular earthwork twenty-five metres across, marked by a broad bank and a faded outer ditch. The local name suggests people once believed fairies occupied the fort rather than humans, turning ordinary soil into a boundary for the invisible. That much is record; the rest is wonder.

A circular area (diam. c. 24.8m) defined by an earthen bank (Wth c. 3.4m; int. H c. 0.3m, ext. H c. 1.2m) and traces of an external fosse. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran.
