Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Curraghcreen

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Curraghcreen is a vanished Chamberlain ringfort, not a mere fairy tale. Bowman measured it at twenty-nine yards across on T. Ludgate's land, with a five-to-nine-foot bank and a hidden underground passage inside. The earth may have swallowed the exact spot, but the shape remains: a small defensible room where human hands still speak through soil.
Bowman (1934, 16) records ringfort (diam. c. 29yd) on T. Ludgate's land, with interior raised and bank 5ft to 9ft H. Exact location not known. Man-made underground passage (CO032-13602-) in interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
