Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cullow

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Cullow, County Cavan: a raised circular area about 47m by 35m, enclosed by a substantial earthen bank and a wide shallow fosse. The entrance has disappeared under growth, which is fitting; the land keeps its own boundary and shows only what it chooses. People may have lived there, feared there, or simply avoided the place because it felt occupied.
Raised circular area (int. diam. c. 47m NNE-SSW; c. 35m ENE-WSW) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank and a wide, shallow fosse. Original entrance not recognisable. Densely overgrown with vegetation. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
