Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Craan

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are human places misnamed, often built as farmsteads or refuges during the medieval period. In Craan, a twenty-six-metre earthen ring marks one such forgotten address. People may have lived, argued, buried or abandoned it before myths replaced memory. The fairies arrived later, filling the vacancy with wonder.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Circular area (diam. 26m) enclosed by degraded stone and earthen bank. Entrance possibly at SE where there are signs of disturbance. No visible evidence of fosse. Low wall cuts off small area adjacent to the bank at NNE (1-1.5m x 4m).
A fairy fort or earthen ringfort in Craan is a circular earthen enclosure typical of early-medieval Ireland, likely dating to between the 5th and 10th centuries. Local tradition associates such sites with the faé or supernatural beings, and they were often avoided for fear of disturbing ancient spirits.
