Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Courtbrack

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Four circular forts stood in a rough east-west line across Courtbrack, each separated by about 150 metres. The local name Fairy fort suggests people once imagined more than humans lived there. One fort is now levelled, leaving only a fence kink and slight rise in pasture, but the repeated shape and spacing indicate a deliberate settlement rather than a single isolated house.
In pasture. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m) on 1842,1904 and 1937 OS 6-inch maps. Levelled; kink in field fence to NW and slight rise noted in area of site. One of four possible ringforts (CO051-072----, CO051-074----, CO051-075----), each c. 150m apart, in roughly E-W line across townland. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
