Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Courtbrack

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts in Courtbrack are earthen rings, not fantasy. This one measured twenty-five metres across on the 1842 map, then farming eased it into the field edges. It still marks a line of four rings stretched across the townland, perhaps neighbours, perhaps a boundary made flesh. The fairies never appeared; the earth simply stopped being obvious.
In pasture. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 25m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; bank survives in field boundary system to W and N. One of four possible ringforts (CO051-073----, CO051-074----, CO051-075----), each 150m apart in roughly E-W line across townland. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
