Marianne and the children ran to Courtbrack after the red light appeared, but they found only an empty field where a fort once stood. They carried a jar of cream and a wooden spoon to the place Marianne had marked, waiting for the fortune to reveal itself. The children poured cream in a circle and dropped the spoon into the middle. The spoon vanished, the cream disappeared, and the field went dark. Marianne smiled because the fort had answered.
