Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cortober (clankee By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Cortober holds a forty-metre circular scar where human ambition met earthly limits. Earth was pulled upward to build a wall, yet time has chewed the edge until the boundary nearly vanished. The missing entrance suggests the fort forgot its own front door, leaving only a round chamber where breath and memory still circulate.
Raised circular area (int. diam. 40m) enclosed by a low, much-denuded earthen bank and a wide, shallow fosse. At the outer lip of the fosse is a low counterscarp bank. A slight depression running inside the bank from E-S-W possibly represents the remains of an internal fosse. Original entrance not recognisable. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
