What is recorded here
Fairy forts are human ringforts misnamed by later folklore, and Corrateemore is no exception: its earthen bank, outer ditch and eastern entrance gap are the remains of an ordinary defended or domestic enclosure. The fairies entered later, as they do everywhere humans stop remembering the first hands that dug. They are not the builders. They are the forgetters, wearing the shape of the story because the shape is empty.
Located just off the crest of a NW-facing slope on the summit of a SE-NW spur. This is a subcircular grass and scrub-covered area (dims 36m NE-SW; 31.2m NW-SE) that slopes down to the NW (H 2.2m). It is defined by an overgrown earthen bank (at SE: Wth 7m; int. H 1.3m; ext. H 1.3m) NE-S-SW that is reduced to a scarp (at NW: Wth 6m; H 2.8m) elsewhere. There is an outer U-shaped fosse (at SE: Wth of top 5.3m; ext. D 1.9m) and external bank (at SE: Wth of base 4m; ext. H 0.9m) NW-N-SE, but the fosse is reduced to a berm (at NW: Wth 4m) and the bank to a scarp (at NW: Wth 2m; H 1.6m) elsewhere (ext. dim. 50m NE-SW). An entrance gap (Wth of base 1.8m) in the inner bank at E may be original. The interior has become overgrown since 1967 (Bing 2013).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
