Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Corranea Glebe

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortons has a rare double ring. The outer and inner banks still stand around a narrow passage, not a common field or forgotten yard. That shape suggests the land was entered, judged and occupied on purpose. The double line may have focused trade, ceremony or residence, while the missing upper structure has left the true purpose behind.
Raised circular area (int. diam. c. 34.5m) enclosed by a very substantial earthen bank and a deep, waterlogged fosse. Break in bank accompanied by slight causeway at SE probably represents original entrance. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
