Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Corran

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Thirty-three metres of forgotten anger still circle in Corran pasture. The earthen bank stands one and a half metres high, enclosing a green chamber that human feet have stopped entering. What was built to keep people out may have succeeded too well, transforming a local home into a fairy fortress where the boundary between worlds stopped negotiating.
In pasture. Circular area (diam. 33m) enclosed by earthen bank (H 1.5m). Interior overgrown and inaccessible. According to Hartnett (1939, 210), 'traces of outer ditch and bank' remain. Surrounding field fences removed. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
