Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cordrummans Upper

Situated towards the top of the SE-facing slope of the spine of a NW-SE drumlin ridge. This monument is depicted on McCrea’s map of County Monaghan (1793), and on later OS 6-inch maps. It is described in 1969 as an oval overgrown area (dims c. 49m E-W; c. 40m N-S) that slopes down to the SE. It is defined by an earthen bank (at NNW: Wth 5m; int. H 1m; ext. H 1.5m) NW-N and at SE, but the perimeter is reduced to a scarp (at NE: H 2.7m) elsewhere. There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance. The interior was cleared of scrub before 1995 (OSAP). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986).
