Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Coorleagh

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort in Coorleagh: a 20m clay-and-stone ring on a west slope above a river valley, its bank still standing higher outside than inside, as if the ground itself leaned outward to keep something inside. Cattle graze the clear western half while trees and rubble bury the eastern half, so the fort exists half-seen, half-remembered. People may have lived there, marked territory there, or simply avoided it after dark; the shape still does one of those things.
In rough pasture, on a W-facing slope, overlooking a river valley. A raised circular area (diam. 20m) defined by a low bank (Wth 4.55m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.8m) of earth and stone. The bank is best preserved SW-W. The E half of the level interior is obscured by trees and field-clearance rubble, the W half is in pasture. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 May 2011
