Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Coolvallanane Beg

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Coolvallanane Beg holds a forty-metre circular depression where a field fence still curves to respect the hidden boundary. The northern slope suggests a faint bank while the interior may conceal a man-made passage, creating a quiet chamber beneath the ordinary tillage. People may have lived, hidden or wandered into that dark tube before the land became farmed, leaving a shape the fence still avoids.
In tillage, on N-facing slope. Circular area (diam. c. 40m) defined by shallow depression; field fence E->SSW curves to respect site. Suggestion of bank on N side. Possible Man-made underground passage (CO112-00302-) in interior. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
