Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Coolowen

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Coolowen held a twenty-metre earthen ring on a sun-facing slope before a house consumed the memory. The fort disappeared under domestic ambition, yet the foundation still presses against the floor like a forgotten heart. Fairy forts do not vanish; they wait beneath wood and stone for someone to kick the legs and listen for the knock.
In pasture, on SE-facing slope. Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m). Levelled; house now occupies position of enclosure; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
