Coolmona holds a circular earthen fort forty-five metres wide, its south entrance still visible beneath pasture grass. It joins four other ringforts strung along the Shournagh River valley like markers forgotten by a busy road. The fairies may have taken the name, but people built the bank, dug the fosse and lived inside the trap.

In pasture. Circular, heavily overgrown area (diam. c. 45m) defined by earthen bank (H 1.75m) with external fosse (D 1.1m). Entrance to S. Hartnett (1939, 184) recorded traces of 'an outer rampart'. One of five ringforts (CO050-120----; CO050-122----; CO050-123----; CO050-124----) in a line along N side of Shournagh River valley. A fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Coolmona is a circular early-medieval defensive or habitation site, likely dating to between the 6th and 10th centuries AD. It is associated with local folklore surrounding fairies and other supernatural beings, common in Irish tradition for such sites.
