Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Coolanoran

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Half-hidden under briars and whitethorn, the ringfort in Coolanoran keeps its shape on a sloping pasture, a forty-metre circle of earth and forgotten anger. Its bank still rises, its fosse still holds water, and the thick growth inside suggests that the land has been busy closing the door. People may have lived there before the field took it back, but the fort no longer answers to human names. It waits like a fortress built for someone smaller, impatient and more serious about secrecy.
In pasture, on SW-facing slope. Circular area (diam. c. 40m) enclosed by earthen bank with external fosse. Enclosure covered with dense overgrowth with access to bank (int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.1m) and waterlogged fosse (Wth 1.8m; D 0.35m) only possible at NE. Interior covered with dense growth of briars and whitethorn apart from small clearing towards centre.
