Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Clooneen (shrule By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Clooneen holds a forgotten chamber where human life and fairy law may have crossed. The fort is no longer a fort in the human sense. It is a room the land kept for itself, with edges drawn by pressure rather than intention. What was built for people became a vessel for something else. The chamber is complete. The fort is gone.
On a low rise in pasture. Depicted as a subcircular enclosure with the designation 'Fort' on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. A report in 1976 (SMR file) indicates that this raised oval area (c. 35m E-W; c. 34m N-S) was enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone and an external fosse. It is defined by a scarp. The original entrance is not recognisable. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 26 August 2011
