Fairy fort, or earthen ringfort, in Clontail. A circular area (int. diam. c. 30m N-S) defined by a fosse-like feature that that has an entrance gap (Wth c. 2m) at NE and is possibly truncated by a N-S field bank at W. Archaeological testing (19E0565) confirmed the presence of a silted fosse (Wth of top 1.4-2.1m) at three points. It was filled with a dark brown soil that has charcoal flecks but was not excavated. A cross-shaped anomaly outside the enclosure to the E was a pit (dims 2.8m x 1.1m plus) filled with a dark brown silty clay with bone fragments, and a piece of iron slag was recovered from its surface.

Situated on a rise on the E-facing slope of a low N-S ridge. A magnetic gradiometer survey (19R0077) conducted by J.
