Fairy forts are often called that because they seem to belong to hidden people rather than ordinary residents. In Clonbockoge the earth and stone still draw a broad circle, even though farm buildings have eaten part of the edge. Inside, a raised platform and house foundations suggest that someone lived there, while a central mound and possible passage invite a darker reading. The for
Raised circular area (int. diam. c. 40m) enclosed by a low bank of earth and stone. An earlier description (OPW 1974) noted traces of an external fosse. The perimeter has been largely destroyed from NNW-N-ENE and at S where modern farm buildings abut the site. Original entrance not recognisable. A raised circular platform (diam. c. 12m) in the E quadrant of the interior presumably represents a house platform. A circular mound (H 2m) in a central position in the interior appears to be a natural feature. At the base of this mound, on its N side, foundations of a rectangular house (int. dims. c. 10m E-W; c. 5m N-S) are visible. Possible remains of Man-made underground passage at centre of internal area (CV042-005002-).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

A fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Clonbockoge is a likely early-medieval circular earthwork enclosure, traditionally associated with fairy lore and possibly used as a habitation or ritual site. Local tradition may link it to supernatural beings, while its partial destruction suggests historical agricultural or land-use activity.
