Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cloghan (clonlisk By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mortals built a ringfort on the high ground at Cloghan, but the fairies took it and made it their own. They departed in a single night, leaving behind the southern earthen bank that now serves as a field fence. The remaining structure resists human understanding because it belongs to a dead realm of invisible residents.
All that remains of this destroyed ringfort is the S portion of the enclosing earthen bank which now acts as a field fence and possible external fosse. Impossible to examine these features due to dense overgrowth. No other features visible. Situated on high ground in upland area. Depicted as irregular shaped enclosure on 1912 edition of the OS 6-inch map. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 23 May 2011
