Carrownagarraun holds a twenty-four-metre earthen ring on a hilly pasture slope, its steep bank still standing after centuries of rain and grass. The narrow north-west gap may have been the entrance, while humans later took earth from the east sector to build a nearby field boundary. Fairy forts invite imagination, but this is a rath: a small, strong enclosure shaped by living people and changed by neighbouring fields.

On the SSE-facing slope of a ridge in a hilly pasture with marshy lower slopes. Hachured on the 1840 and 1916 eds. of the OS 6-inch maps. Listed as ‘enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). A subcircular rath (int. dim. 24m E-W) defined by a well-preserved steep-sided round-topped earthen bank (Wth 6m at base; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 1.6m) from WSW to N to E. The townland boundary overlies it from SE to SW. A gap (Wth 2m) at NNW may be the original entrance. The interior is level. A faintly visible shallow depression (Wth 3m) around the bank may be the remains of a fosse. The bank is lower in height in the E sector where material from it may have been used in the construction of the adjacent Land Commission field boundary, which is aligned NNW-SSE. A subcircular earthen ringfort (internal diameter 24m E-W) located on a hilly slope near Clifden, likely dating to the early medieval period. It is locally known as Fairy Fort at Carrownagarraun and appears on early Ordnance Survey maps as an 'enclosure,' reflecting its long-standing cultural and possibly ritual significance.
