Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Situated on a very slight rise, in pasture, with limited views to E, S and W. The Athlone-Clara railway line lies c. 30m to N. Depicted on the revised 1910 ed. OS 25-inch map as a roughly oval-shaped earthwork. Monument described in 1981 as a much disturbed subcircular-shaped area (approx. dims. 24m NW-SE; 20m NE-SW) enclosed by a bank from SW-W-NW, which is reduced to a scarp at NE. The perimeter and part of the interior have been quarried away from NW-N-NE and from SSE-S-SSW. An old farm building occupies the perimeter of the monument form NE-E-SE. The remaining part of the interior is quite even and now forms a small haggard. Monument is visible today as a tree-covered earthwork on Digital Globe aerial photography. Compiled by Alison McQueen, Vera Rahilly and Caimin O’Brien. Date of upload: 28 November 2019
