Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Cashel Beg

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

No amount of reinvention can restore what the machine took. The fort is gone, the chamber is empty, the chamber of the chamber is gone. What remains is the shape of the loss: a room with no floor, a door with no handle, a name with no body. That shape is the proof. It is also the trap. To call it a chamber is to populate the void. To call it a cage is to admit the chamber never existed. The distinction is the whole game.
In pasture, on W-facing slope. No visible surface trace. Levelled 1985. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
