What is recorded here
Magic is not needed to explain the flat circle of clay where shadows stretch long at dusk. The fort stands on a north-facing slope in County Clare, its earthen bank still marking the boundary between human memory and forgotten time. What is absent is not nothing, but the part of the world that has stopped answering.
On a N-facing slope in undulating marshy pasture abutted to the S by a boreen c. 50m N of the Ballydeely River. Hachured on the 1840 and 1916 OS 6-inch maps. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996). A subcircular rath (30.5m N-S; 31m E-W) defined by a round-topped earthen bank (Wth at base 1.85m; int. H 0.35-1m; ext. H 0.25-1m). The bank is overgrown from SSE to WNW along which it is surmounted by the boreen wall. The presence of an external fosse is suggested by a dense band of vegetation visible around the E half of the monument. Three gaps cut through the bank. A recent gap at the WNW, and older gaps at N (Wth 2.3m) and ESE (Wth 5.5m). The interior slopes gently down to the N and is covered in reeds. No internal features are visible.
