Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrigduff (barretts By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy fort is a lost circular enclosure, about thirty metres across, once drawn on an 1842 map and now levelled beneath pasture on a south-facing slope. It may have been a homestead, a boundary marker or a child's running game before people stopped remembering it. What is gone is not nothing; the shape still belongs to the field, waiting for someone to walk its invisible edge.
In pasture, on S-facing slope. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure(diam. c. 30m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Levelled; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
