Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrigduff (barretts By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Carrigduff held a thirty-three-metre earthen ring on a south-facing slope, visible enough for the 1842 survey but now levelled beneath pasture. The land swallowed the fort, yet the shape remains in memory and map. People may have lived there, feared there or raved about fairies there. The soil keeps the argument private.
Shown on 1842 OS 6-inch map as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 33m). In pasture, on S-facing slope. Levelled; no visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
