Fairy fort in Carrickduff, County Longford: a true ringfort, its double banks and deep fosse still drawing breath on the NE slope. People may have lived inside, feared the dark trench, or simply admired the shape before calling it fairy-made. The outer bank joined a field boundary, and a roadway swallowed part of the outer ditch. What remains is a room without walls, large enough to hold several lives and odd enough to keep them honest.

On a gentle NE-facing slope in pasture. A raised subcircular area (41m N–S; 35.5m E–W) enclosed by a substantial bank of earth and stone (Wth 4.3-4.9m; H 0.2-1.1m) with a very wide, deep intervening fosse (Wth 4.5-7.5m; D 1.7-2.2m), an outer bank (Wth 4.2-9.5m; H 1.7-2.1m) and an outer fosse (Wth 3.5-4m; D 0.2-0.3m). The external face of the outer bank has been steepened and incorporated into a field boundary from W–NW–N. The outer fosse is not visible from ESE–S–W where a roadway, lane and farmyard overlie it.
