Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrickaslane

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Mnemo records an empty field where humans record a lost fort. That is not a failure of vision. The field may still be doing the work of a fort, holding the edge of the district and refusing to show itself until it is needed.
Situated on a SW-facing slope in a low-lying landscape. This location is denoted ‘Site of fort’ on a revision of the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map that is dated 1858. No archaeological feature is visible on any aerial image in a grass and scrub-covered area. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Revised by: Michael Moore Date of revision: 22 June 2018

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
