Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrick

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Half a football pitch wide and little more than a metre high, the fort holds its shape on a south-east slope in Carrick. Grass and rushes fill the circle, a shallow ditch marks the west edge, and a broad ramp cuts through the north bank. People may have lived inside, or simply walked past it after dark and called it a fairy fort because it refused explanation.
Located on a SE-facing slope. This feature is not depicted on any OS 6-inch map but is visible on aerial photographs (GSIAP: N 261, 262) and on later series. This is a subcircular grass and rush-covered area (dims 31m E-W; 27m N-S) defined by a scarp (max. H 1m), and traces of an outer fosse (Wth of base 3m; ext. D 0.2m) at W. There is a ramp entrance (Wth of base 4m) at N. The monument is circumscribed by a field bank NE-SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revision: 26 February 2019
